PPI Response: Make Work Pay – Employment Rights for Unpaid Carers and Parents of Seriously Ill Children

On Monday 27 July 2026, the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) responded to the UK Government's consultation on employment rights for unpaid carers and parents of seriously ill children. The consultation forms part of the Government's review of employment rights for unpaid carers and seeks views on whether additional workplace support is needed to help people balance paid employment with caring responsibilities.

Drawing on findings from the PPI's Underpensioned Index, our response highlights the long-term impact that unpaid caring responsibilities can have on employment, earnings and pension saving, particularly for women.
