London Assembly Housing Committee’s Call for Evidence: Housing for Older Londoners

On Thursday 08 October 2026, The Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) responded to the London Assembly Housing Committee's Call for Evidence: Housing for Older Londoners.

While the PPI did not respond to every question set out in the Committee’s Call for Evidence, we contributed relevant evidence from our recent research. Taken together, this evidence highlights the increasingly important relationship between housing tenure, housing costs, pension saving and retirement adequacy, and the implications for financial security in later life.

Our response draws on research examining housing costs and retirement adequacy, the interaction between Housing Benefit and private pension savings for older renters, and the wider implications of increasing numbers of people renting in retirement. The evidence highlights the importance of considering housing and retirement income policy together when addressing the longer-term financial security of older people.
