Briefing Note Number 125 - Longevity inequality

The Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) is today publishing Briefing Note Number 125 - Longevity inequality, with contributions from Age UK who kindly hosted the roundtable to this Briefing Note.

On average, people are living longer within the UK. However, the increases in life expectancy are not shared equally among the population. Shifts in healthy life expectancy are also distributed unevenly among the population. With unevenly distributed life expectancy and healthy life expectancy improvements, individuals may face retirement under very different circumstances.

This Briefing Note focuses on the inequalities in life expectancy and healthy life expectancy, looking at potential reasons why these inequalities exist and the implications of this for retirement income. Policy options which could help reduce the inequality are also explored within this Briefing Note.
