Following the success of our Supporter only roundtable, The Commission Conversation: Beyond the Terms, in August 2025, the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) was delighted to welcome back Professor Nick Pearce, one of the Pensions Commissioners, for a further exclusive event for PPI Supporters on Tuesday 30 June 2026, kindly hosted by Hymans Robertson.

Chaired by Dr Suzy Morrissey FCA, Deputy Director of the PPI, the roundtable provided Supporters with a valuable opportunity to engage directly with Prof. Pearce following the publication of the Pensions Commission’s interim report, Pensions 2050: Evidence and Future Priorities.

To start, Prof. Pearce shared a presentation summarising the Report. It was a great achievement in itself to summarise 190 pages, and it was followed by a discussion held under the Chatham House Rule, with questions from attendees covering a range of areas from the report. 

As may be expected, there were plenty of questions on supporting low earners and the self-employed to save for retirement, along with discussion of the gender pensions gap.  While acknowledging the scope of the Second Pensions Commissions, we still managed to discuss housing, social case, and taxation, and to consider AI and changing political leadership.

With the focus on 2050, there was an acknowledgement that we will be facing a very different pensions landscape by that time, with fewer pension providers, and larger DC pots, which were acquired over time spent with more employers than in the past. 

The challenging task facing the Pensions Commission to advise on pension policy settings to take us to that point in the future, while providing good retirement outcomes for all, was acknowledged.  We are all looking forward to the Commission’s final report early in 2027.
